how to enter ycn

February 17th, 2011

Digital Submissions, how to enter!

Some important points to note are...
  • To enter this year you'll need to fill out a form online.
  • A PDF presentation is our ideal way to see your work.
  • Please ensure that each page of your PDF is labelled with your full name.
  • Please clearly explain the ideas behind your entry by either annotating your PDF or by providing a supporting typed document.
  • You will need to zip up a folder containing all items into one file - and upload just that.
We do of course recognise the importance of the handheld, tactile and physical in demonstrating or enlivening a submission; so welcome the submission of selected physical elements (where you feel it's appropriate) to support digital entries.
To do this you'll need to download an item label from here and attach this to any physical pieces of work and send these to:
Kezia Clark, YCN, 72 Rivington Street, London, EC2A 3AY
To enter your submission head here.
Good Luck!

street art/large scale art

I recently watched Banksy's film 'Exit though the gift shop'. I have never been as fussed about Banksy's work aesthetically, as there are a lot of other street artists that I prefer, although I like his work in terms of the impact it has had on the art world, whether it was intentional or not. I went to Berlin a couple of years ago and saw some of the most incredible street art I have ever seen which inspired me to have a go with a friend from home. I would like to explore the idea of working on this scale, perhaps with stencils etc and create something really quite big. I am aware of the legality issues, but I could always work on large pieces of board. As I am going home for two weeks it could be a good brief to do as I will have the luxury of a garden.

tutorial on how to use lighting effects in photoshop

I have been researching how to create lighting effects in Photoshop because I want to try and light up the bottles behind the bar in the bar illustration I have been working on.
See practice blog for application of this to my own work.

ycn submission guidelines

Important New Year's Update. This year we are introducing an online submissions process for the YCN Student Awards. We are still hopeful and expectant of the same loving attention to detail in the presentation and layout of ideas - but do not require that these be printed and physically delivered. Entries will be zipped up and uploaded via the YCN website along with the completion of a simple online registration instead. We do of course recognise the importance of the handheld, tactile and physical in demonstrating or enlivening a submission; so welcome the submission of selected physical elements (where you feel it's appropriate) to support digital entries. All those wishing to enter the Awards must do so online. You can do so here.

Please do not hesitate to contact Kezia at YCN with any questions in the meantime - kezia@ycnonline.com

Introduction
The annual YCN Student Awards exist to inspire, support and showcase emerging creative talent, and to connect it with the creative industries. The awards centre around a collection of live creative briefs, written each year by partnering organisations, and spanning broad creative disciplines.
The Call for Entries for this year’s programme was launched on 2nd November 2010.

The Deadline for Submissions is 6pm on Friday 25th March 2011.
How work is Judged
Work submitted in response to each brief is closely examined by the organisations that wrote it, often alongside the agencies with whom they work. They are asked to draw up a shortlist of the submissions felt to be the most outstanding from all those received in response to their brief. The originators of these submissions are awarded with a Commendation.
This judging takes place over April and May, with Commendations published online, sent to course tutors and sent in writing to entrants in June 2011.
Student Awards Ceremony
An annual Awards bash sees all those commended colourfully honoured in a prestigious setting.
Eligibility
Submissions are invited from anyone studying or not working full time in a creative department (i.e at a design or advertising agency). If you are undertaking work experience or a creative placement then you are welcome to enter. There are no age restrictions.
Entry details
The deadline for submitting work is 6pm on the 25th March 2011.

There is no entry fee to submit work.

All submissions must be sent, or brought, to:

Sending supporting physical elements and item Labels
You are welcome to post or deliver elements to support your digital submission. Item labels to attach to them can be found here. Our address is YCN, 72 Rivington Street, London, EC2A 3AY

Images and other materials that are under copyright
If you have used images or other materials as part of your submission that may be under copyright, please make clear where you have acquired them when completing your digital submission.

Further use of work
It may be that the organisation to whose brief you respond wishes to discuss with you the further development and use of your work. Organisations and agencies involved in the awards recognise the importance of including originators in further development or implementation of work. YCN will encourage full communication between parties and assist in discussion where appropriate

Work that has not been arranged to be collected by the end of July 2011 will be recycled.

While absolutely every effort is made to ensure the safety of work, YCN cannot accept responsibility for loss of or damage to work submitted.

research trip to call lane

These are the photographs from our research trip. Matt took the majority of the photographs whilst I instigated small interviews with the bar staff to gather some information to help us with our project.

in bar entertainment ideas...

My friend works for an events company in London and she was able to get me some pictures of some of the entertainment that she has photographed before the guests have arrived. These parties are very much exclusive and thrown by companies and individuals with an enormous amount of money, but I think in terms of our brief, the sky really is the limit. We don't have to consider cost, so we are intending to mock up a design for some in bar entertainment similar to these ideas :

research trip to call lane

Matt and I went into Leeds city centre to get some good photographs of some bars for mock ups and also to get some feedback from bar staff on our ideas so far and whether they felt that they would be successful if they were put into practice.

The general consensus was that the best way for a bottle to stand out is for it to be a different/bright colour from the other bottles or an interesting shape and that the whisky bottles tended to be the most uninteresting of all the bottles. Unfortunately the brief stipulates that we must not change the bottle itself. This limits us enormously but there are still options.
The barman in Call Lane Social showed us this bottle which has a rubber wax effect one. This is something that we had considered; (attachable decoration for the bottle), although we have not explored this fully.

Ineteresting bottles from Oporto :

The bar lady in Vodka Revolutions controversially said that bottle shape and colour has no impact on attracting clientele. She did think that our glass design idea would have a good impact on attracting customers.

drinks fountains

One of our ideas is for there to be Glayva branded fountains in the bars that are part of  the launch. Potentially there could be four; one for each long drink, or simple a fountain containing just Glayva.
Most of the ones that I have been looking at are pretty tacky which does not send the right message to the potential customers. Here are some examples of the more appropriate classier ones that could form the basis of our design...

uplifting famous quotes about life

I spoke with Matt about my quotes idea for the cocktail napkins and he felt really positive about it. However, Matt has been researching alcohol advertising laws as his part of the research and unfortunately most of them are unsuitable because they are on the subject of alcohol.
We talked it over and decided that positive, inspirational quotes would have the same impact and would paint the brand in a more positive light. We want people to associate drinking Glava cocktails with these positive and humorous quotations. Here are some that I have found that we could use.....
